We all love movies, specifically DVDs (name one of your friend's that doesn't have a DVD collection), but one thing we hate is buying them; that is why the DVD rental business is thriving so well. Instead of forking out for full ownership, for some reason we prefer to rent them for only a few dollars less. Whatever the psychology behind that is I don't know, but every night DVD rental shops and stores all around the world are full of people picking their next film to watch, or are they?
Rental shops are nothing new. Remember VHS, Better known as video tape? You know those big brick like things that slotted in to those fat breadbox like players? Well that took off in the 70s and 80s and ever since teens have been renting out their slasher flicks, moms and daughters have been renting out their romantic comedies and strange middle aged men have been led to the back to choose from the mystical adult sections.
We all got used to DVDs, I mean they are just smaller disc like versions of tapes really, but then the internet had to come a long and screw it up, make you sign up to strange websites and create crazy usernames so you can be at the forefront of technology. It's not that bad!
What am I talking about? Online DVD Rental! That's right now instead of having to walk, heck drive (how boring) to the DVD rental store, now all you have to do is sign in to your online account, click the titles you want and in a day you'll have them delivered to your door, where you can keep them for as long as you want before sending them back in a prepaid envelope (what could be easier?) You can keep lists of all the films you want to see and then it is all done automatically. You can leave reviews of the movie to aid other customers and you can even request films that aren't in stock.
There are many online DVD rental services out there, each with their own benefits, like unlimited DVDs per month, video game rentals on top, 5 discs at a time and so on. One thing they all share in common of free trials. In theory you can use a month's free trial from each company and you wouldn't have paid a dollar for over a year, yet you'd have seen possibly hundreds of great movies. That my friends is the power of the internet.
Whether you still like your old tapes, love a trip to the rental store or are full immersed in online DVD rental, one thing's for sure. We'll be watching movies for years to come. Hell judging by recent developments we wont even need discs in a few years!
