Blu-Ray. What a year it's been for film lover's who are using this format. With the introduction of high definition viewing, Blu-Ray has really come to the forefront of movie viewing at home, especially with the large flatscreen LCD or Plasma's and home cinema equipment available to watch them on and listen to their awesome sound formats with.
And with the demise of Toshiba's HDDVD format, things can only get better in 2009 for the winning format.
There are more than 2000 Blu-ray movies on sale now, but for 2008 the following were the real sound and vision superstar's of 2008.
Number 5
Apocalypto
This is the definition of silky smooth and is one of the reference titles that the magazines use when reviewing Blu-Ray players or high definition TV's. It's that good. The colour and detail in the jungle scenes and of the characters is jaw droppingly good, while the bassy, drum heavy sound score will make a capable amplifier purr. The waterfall scene in the movie is for the complete experience. Ambient jungle sounds, roaring water and amazing close ups.
Number 4
Transformers
No prisoners have been taken here by Michael Bay when it comes to the action or the production values. The detail is supremely strong and stable, whilst the sound is as to be expected, massive. To be noted in the movie is the street battle's swoops which call for your subwoofer to get it's ultimate workout.
Number 3
Cars
Pixar the makers, are the masters of their craft when it comes to producing slick computer generated animation and it seems that Blu-Ray could have been brought about just for them. This effort of digital to digital transfer is exemplary. With the Dolby True HD format as the sound, it is spot on. Crisp dialogue with the sound commandeering your satellite speakers, you are truly immersed in the action.
Number 2
James Bond Box Set
It's impossible to believe that one of the films contained in this box set is currently 46 years old. Thunderball and Dr No are impressive to say the least. The box set includes 6 films which will keep you occupied again and again.
Number 1
WALL-E
Pixar the makers have managed to make this look like a documentary made in the future. It's that good. It has a staggering picture with awesome, captivating sound, along with a great story. The movie also contains what is probably the best ever high definition scene with the main character, WALL-E and his pet cockroach.
