The internet is a collection of networks linked together to form a huge data pool where computers or nodes collect and send data. Information exchange works when a data packet is being sent out of a private network to a public network, after layers of networks, finally reaching the recipient's private network where data is being read.
From an end user's view, the router purchased is going to be used as a public network gateway that routes data packets from the internet to users in that particular private network. A good network router will have network security features such as Network Address Translation (NAT) to modify a data's address source so that a sender's address is not revealed to unauthorized viewers. This IP address of 192.168.2.1 can be found as a default hardware access page for Belkin or SMC routers, where settings for NAT can be found here.
Visiting 192.168.2.1 in your browser will display a protected webpage stored in the router's memory. This web page is where you will be able to access the features of that particular router. Say for instance, a Belkin all-in-one Wireless Access Point cum ADSL modem will have a list of features such as wireless security settings, NAT settings, DHCP settings, ADSL dialup settings and other network related settings. All the main features of that router can be found by simply accessing the password protected webpage found on the IP address of 192.168.2.1.
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol in a router is used to enable automatic IP assignment to computers logged on to the network. As default the router's IP address is 192.168.2.1, it is not advised to set a computer with a static IP address of 192.168.2.1. Doing so will result in an IP clash, where information exchanging will not be complete. It will be better if the user enable the DHCP feature in the router so that other computers will not be having 192.168.2.1 as their IP address and keeping their assigned IP addresses within the 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255 range which is a private network block.
