How to Easily Extract Videos From a DVD For Editing

Do you want to edit a DVD or maybe take out a part of the DVD to be edited with other video footages?

Do you know that you do not need to buy any software to extract video clips from a DVD?

You can even do it yourself. All you need is your PC with a DVD drive.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to extract video from a DVD using a PC running on Windows XP.

Steps to extract videos from a DVD:

  1. Insert DVD into your PC's DVD drive. The DVD may take about a minute to spin and load depending on the speed of your drive.
  2. Turn off any video player that pops up automatically. Most PCs are configured to detect a DVD in the drive and start playing by launching a DVD video player.
  3. From the "Start" button, open "My Computer". This is the easy way to get into your DVD data files. You can also use file explorer.
  4. Activate "Folder" view in the "My Computer" window. If you do not activate folder view, clicking on the DVD drive may activate the DVD video player again. The folder view is actually the file explorer view.
  5. Select the DVD drive. Click on the drive letter or icon that represents your DVD. You will see at least 2 folders called "Audio_TS" and "Video_TS".
  6. Select "Video_TS" folder. You will see a number of files, but take note of the "VOB" files.
  7. Create a new folder on your PC. You want to transfer the VOB files to this folder. You want to get the video files out from the DVD and on to your PC.
  8. Drag and drop the VOB files into the new folder you created. It will take a few minutes for the files to transfer as the video files may be very large. An hour of good video may be 4 GB in size.

Done! The VOB files are video clips that can be dropped into your video editing software for editing like any other video clips.

If your video editing software does not recognize VOB files, just rename the files by changing the ".VOB" to".MPG".

VOB files are technically MPEG2 files.

Please note that this technique will not work on copy protected DVDs.
