How to Repair a Scratched DVD For Free

Admittedly DVD's are much better than the old VHS tapes. Easier to store, more features, the tape doesn't get caught in the machine, and you can't erase a DVD by dropping it. Unfortunately there is one danger always lurking for us DVD owners; Scratches. The truth is that you can repair a scratched DVD very easily and, by the end of this article, you will know how.

Repair a scratched DVD for free!

The first thing you should know is that a scratched dvd is not a big deal. The majority of your DVD is actually plastic Buffer that is intended to protect the thin Data Layer beneath. This buffer can take a real beating and still work (that's why it's there). Unfortunately sometimes the scratches get a little too deep and the optic can't get a clear line-of-sight to the data.

The easiest way to repair a scratched DVD is to make deep scratches more shallow (compared to the plastic buffer surrounding them). By polishing the surrounding plastic down you make it easier for your DVD player to see the data. Sounds simple, doesn't it?

What you Need to repair a scratched DVD

All you really need is some baking soda toothpaste (not gel) and a lint-free cloth. Wet the DVD down and apply a small amount of toothpaste. Using your cloth, gently rub the area around the crack. It is important that you rub the DVD in Straight Lines (from the inside to the outside) and NOT in circular motions. Rub 10-15 times before moving onto the next scratch.

Once you're done just rinse off the disc with warm water and let it air dry. Do not wipe it down or try to use it before it is completely dry. Now you know how to repair a scratched DVD.

Note: Polishing scratches will work in the short-term unless the scratch is already down to the foil layer. Do Not do this repeatedly because you are slowly wearing down the plastic buffer. For repeated scratches or deep gouges you should consider resurfacing the DVD entirely.
