George Lucas

Most people associate George Lucas with Star Wars but for me, he is always associated with my favorite surround sound system, THX. Currently in the state where I live there is not a movie theater that has the THX sound system.

George Walton Lucas. Jr. is one of the most financially successful independent film director and producers. He became famous for creating the epic Star Wars saga and together with his friend Steven Spielberg, the popular Indiana Jones trilogy. I am eagerly waiting to see the fourth Indiana Jones. I hope Harrison Ford will not show his age.

George Lucas was a four-time Academy Award(Oscar) nominee as director, producer and screenwriter. On June 9, 2005 he was awarded the Life Achievement Award by the American Film Institute.

He was raised on a walnut ranch at Modesto, California. His parents sold retail office supplies. He attended Modesto Junior College before enrolling at the University of California film school. He is married to Maria Lou Griffin, a film editor who won an Oscar for the Film Star Wars Episode IV.

He made a short film THX-1138 which won the first prize at the 1967-68 National Student Film Festival. He was then awarded a scholarship by Warner brothers to observe the making of Finian's Rainbow which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Then they became good friends and formed a company called American Zoetrope in 1969. The full version of his film THX-1138 was the fist project of the company.

Coppola went on to produce of the Godfather in 1972 and Lucas formed his own company called Lucasfilm. His second film was American Grafitti which won a Golden Globe award and garnered 5 Oscar nominations. Then in 1973-74 he began writing the screenplay for Star Wars. The next year he established the Industrial Light and Magic due to special effects needed for the movie. Star Wars then became a box office hit and won seven Academy Awards. And the rest was history.

I am eagerly waiting to see his fourth collaboration, Indiana Jones, with Steven Spielberg. I hope Harrison Ford will not show his age in this movie.

Suthin Liptawat is a movie enthusiast. He sees at least 100 movies a year on the silver screen. See his website about movies at http://www.entertainmentandmovie.com
