In my previous line of work, people ask me all the time "how can I speed up my computer?" Of course the computer store people will have them buy more memory. I always tried to tell people that more memory will speed up your computer because the computer will have more room to work with. But a more efficient method is to clean up the memory that you already have.
Your computer memory, otherwise known as your RAM, or Random Access Memory, is a lot like the top of your desk, while your computer storage, otherwise known as your hard drive is like a filing cabinet. If you take files out of your filing cabinet and put them on top of your desk, this will allow you to work with your files. If you get a larger desk, like getting more Memory, you will be able to access more files at the same time.
But do you see where I am going with this?
You can get as large a desk as you want, if you do not stop filling it with files, you will never have enough space. What you really need to do is change your habits.
You have very many programs on your computer that turn on as soon as your computer turns on. Move your mouse to the bottom of your screen and allow the taskbar to pop up. Now look at the icons at the right of your taskbar. Those are all programs that are running right now and consuming memory and slowing down your computer. How many are there? I have seen computers with 20 or more. I have only three, a firewall, a pop-up blocker, and my volume control.
How many does one really need? Those are there so that the program in question will come up faster when you click on it. You do not need most of them: A printer, a PDF Reader, a photo viewer. If you are willing to wait a few extra seconds for your printer to start printing then right click on the icon and scroll up to "exit" this will turn of the application until you really need it and speed up your computer for free.
There are hundreds of other things that could be slowing you down, for a free scan Have a look at this and see how many issues you have.
