Thinking of Taking Up the Guitar?

The guitar is the king of cool instruments. From swaggering guitar slingers on-stage to the heartthrob solo singer at a campfire guitarists are looked upon with awe and envy. If you would like to join the legions of guitar players around the world, where do you start? The best place is with quality lessons.

Guitar lessons can be done in many forms, most notably live lessons, online lessons, and book or DVD lessons. In this article, I'll examine the different types of guitar lessons, and the pros and cons of each.

First let's look at live, face to face lessons. Definitely the way to go if you can afford them and have the same time available each week for scheduled lessons. With live lessons, you will have an instructor right there able to correct your mistakes early before they become bad, impossible to break, habits. A live instructor will be able to pass along their real life knowledge, something you just can't get from a book or DVD.

But, with a book or DVD, you have flexibility in that you can work on your lesson when you have time. Unfortunately this can be a huge downfall if you do not have the discipline to keep plugging along, especially when the going gets tough - and it will.

A good combination of the previous methods is online classes. With a true online course, you have the ability to interact with a remotely located instructor who can show you how to play in a particular style you may be interested in, or teach you a song that you have always wanted to learn. Again, you are not locked into any particular time frame, you can schedule a lesson when it is convenient for you.

So, if you lack the discipline to work on your own with a book or DVD, I would recommend live lessons. If you can't afford or don't have a schedule that would fit with live lessons, online lessons may be for you.
