Apple's new iPod touch is basically a stripped down iPhone, minus the GSM radio required to make phone calls. The device was unveiled to the world on September 9, 2008 by Apple's CEO Steve Jobs during the Let's Rock keynote.
The new device still sports the usual features found in the previous model, like 802.11b/g Wi-Fi for wireless networking, a beautiful 3.5" multi-touch capable widescreen display at 320x480 pixels. Built-in software makes it possible to watch movies, view photos, surf the web and listen to music. It also features the iTunes Wi-Fi Store that allows purchase of music directly from the device itself.
The new generation device now comes with a sleeker contoured back that makes it feel even better in your hands. Its stunningly thin body is enclosed by polished stainless steel that also serves as a mirror.
Apple is actively marketing its new product as a fun device for games, and this is made possible with more than 1,700 games (and counting) available from the App Store. Best of all, the App Store is just a tap away via the built-in App Store application.
A built-in speaker makes watching movies and listening to music a breeze. There's no need to fiddle around with cables anymore. Also new to this version is the built-in external volume control buttons, touted by Apple as one of the most-requested feature.
For those runners in you, the built-in Nike+ is a blessing. I am currently running with my old 4th generation iPod photo in my back-pocket and Nike+ Sportband. I can now tap onto the Nike+ features such as Power Song directly from the application itself.
Lastly, the new device is rated to last for 36 hours while playing music and 6 hours when watching movies. That's much better than the previous generation's 22 hours and 5 hours respectively.
The new models come with built-in flash storage capacities of 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. Pricing range start from US$229 and up.
